This typical Cappadocian cave church dates back to the 10th century. El Nazar in the vicinity of the Göreme Open Air Museum is a small cross-shaped church carved into a fairy rock chimney. It has the main nave and three apses. The ceiling is covered with frescoes. Many scenes depict Jesus’ life from childhood to his crucifixion and resurrection. The central dome has a small window that illuminates the paintings, a rare feature in Cappadocian cave churches. Dome features a fresco of Christ’s ascension to heaven. The resurrected Jesus is surrounded by angels and the twelve apostles.
