Fort Niagara (near Niagara Falls, USA) was an important French outpost. It guarded the route to the upper Great Lakes. In summer of 1759 British troops with support of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy attacked and conquered the fort. Later it went into American hands and played a key role in destroying Fort George) - standing on the opposite side of the Niagara River - in the beginning of the War of 1812.
