Golden Domes

The walled Old Town today was exactly the entire city of Jerusalem, until 1860, when for the first time new residential districts were built outside the walls. It is hard to believe today when you look at the size of modern Jerusalem, the largest city in Israel. One of the oldest cities in the world has always been a place of religious conflicts and bloodshed. A holy city for followers of the three major faiths, Jerusalem has high concentration of sacred places and related to them shrines, Temple Mount and the Western Wall for Jews, Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians, Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims.

The four districts of Jerusalem represent religious contentions that have existed here for centuries. The present designation however, was introduced in the 19th century. The Old City is divided into four parts: the Muslim Quarter, the Christian Quarter, the Jewish Quarter and the Armenian Quarter. There was previously another small Moroccan District, but it was demolished by the Israelis in 1967 in order to provide better access to the Western Wall.
