Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey is a crash site of the German Hindenburg, the largest rigid airship ever constructed. In 1936 the 245 m (804 ft) long air ship started her commercial service between Germany and North and South Americas. On May 6, 1937, while landing here after crossings Atlantic, the hydrogen-inflated Hindenburg burst into flames and was completely destroyed. That day marked the end of the use of rigid airships in commercial air transportation. Hangar One which housed many rigid airships (including Hindenburg) is a witness of this disaster.
