Guanajuato, a Spanish colonial city in Mexico with many Baroque and Churrigueresque buildings, is home to the very interesting El Museo De Las Momias ("The Museum of the Mummies"). The exhibition presents naturally mummified bodies that have been exhumed from local cemeteries. It is an extraordinary experience to walk among dozens of human corpses. You get the impression that people standing by the walls are still looking at you. You can find there not only adults, but also children and mummified babies. According to the local custom, women were buried with their hands under their breasts, men with their hands on their bellies. However, one of the women has her hands in a completely different pose. Hands are raised, palms near the face. This suggests that perhaps this person was buried alive and woke up in the grave.
