Many think that people living in New York City are different from other Americans. This is probably true, but this group is not easy to define. New York City area is a densely populated region of millions of people from different cultures, races, and religions. A big number of them are first generation emigrants.
New Yorkers speak with their own accent, but ethnical groups like African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, or European Americans speak with their own recognizable variety. Some New Yorkers simply do not speak English, knowing Spanish or Cantonese is just enough for them. On the other side more and more people in New York City speak Spanglish, a mix of Spanish and English.
