Completed in 1906, the Charles II-style mansion on Long Island, NY surrounded is by 200 acres of gardens, woodlands, and ponds. Westbury House, a former home of the Phipps family, contains 23 rooms and features fine English antiques and decorative arts.
An English architect of the Westbury House paid attention to detail and choice of the appropriate building materials. To create an authentic English country estate, stone slates were needed for the roofing. This is why an architect decided to import many tons of stone quarried in Collyweston, England. Today, it is the only house outside England that is covered with such a roof. Other architects of the time preferred wood or asphalt shingles sometimes terracotta tiles, or slates mined in the United States.
