The Cherokee town of Tuskegee, Tennessee, is a birthplace of Sequoyah, Native American of the Cherokee Nation. He is the person who made reading and writing in the Cherokee language possible. In 1821 he independently created Cherokee syllabary that was widely adopted four years later. This had a tremendous impact on the Cherokee people. This enabled them to create and record their own constitution. For the first time, they could document laws, religious traditions, and register births, deaths and marriages. Within 10 years about ninety percent of Cherokee could read and write.
