Spanish colonization began here at the end of the 15th century. That is why almost the entire region speaks Spanish. The countries in the southernmost part of North America are small and poor. Civil wars shook the region not long ago, now crime is high. Central America experiences frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and devastating hurricanes. Torrential rains and landslides are not uncommon.
