Fort Mackinac

The British were the first to build the limestone fort on the Mackinac Island in 1781. It was a time when control of the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron became a priority. After the American Revolutionary War, the island became a part for the United States and the British left the fort.

A small US garrison stationed in the fort when the British supported by Native Americans captured the island in 1812. After the War of 1812, Mackinac Island was returned to the Americans. With the passage of time, Fort Mackinac (Michigan, USA) lost its military importance and was closed in 1895.
