Costa Rica abolished its military force in 1948. Few countries can afford such a move, but it has helped Costa Rica avoid the political turmoil and civil wars that reached other Central American countries in the second half of the 20th century. Costa Rica is the most stable democracy in the region. It provides citizens with free public education and emphasis on environmental protection. The country promotes tourism and is the most visited country in the Central American region.
