Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was Ontario's first European settlement and French Jesuit mission to the Wyandot (commonly known as the Huron) people. In 1639, 18 monks began construction of a community. Walled missionary village contained stables, cookhouse, a chapel, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for locals. In 1642, facing Iroquois aggression the missionaries decided to burn the whole mission.
