North American Fortifications

Over many centuries many military fortification have been built by colonial powers in North America. They were required to protect their trade posts and allowed further expansion. Forts initially British, French or Spanish became later Canadian, American and Mexican. With the passage of time military tactics have changed and defense structures had to be upgraded or rebuilt. Today, not many fortifications are in its original shape, but still standing structures—one or two centuries old forts—in USA, Canada, Mexico or Bermuda are interesting historical sites worth visiting.
