Colonial Heritage
Colonial Heritage - Expedition Map

Colonial heritage describes the changes that affect the region and its inhabitants ruled by an invasive colonial ruler. In Americas it all started with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Caribbean in 1492. From that moment on, the kingdom of Spain took the lead in this region. Spain invaded all the counties what is Mexico and Central America today. Ruthless rule, slavery, and forced religion conversion were hallmarks of the colonial era. Indigenous people suffered, their languages, cultures and beliefs were almost erased.

Over a year ago, while in Mexico, we had to interrupt our overland expedition. We were heading south, but due to spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, countries in central America began to close their borders. Back then, in March of 2020 we decided to drive back to the USA. After over a year, people have learned to live with a pandemic. It was now known that covid vaccination was simplifying border procedures. It was a right moment to start expedition from the beginning. It was time to head south to Panama.
