It is one of the two well-known monumental symbols of Paris, France. The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The inner walls are engraved with the names of some great battles of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and the names of the greatest military leaders.
Inspired by the 1st-century Arch of Titus in Rome, the Arch in Paris glorifies French war victories. Each of the four pillars of the arch contains sculptural groups that represent the French period of intense political changes, from the absolute monarchy to the Republic in 1792, then the empire in 1804, and then the restoration of the monarchy in 1815.
