The Netherlands is unusual country because of its size, distinct history and famous painters. Only about 50% of its land exceeds 1 meter/ 3 ft above sea level, and almost 26% falling below sea level. For most of its history country relied on trade, based on freedom and tolerance. Through the modern history these were the key elements of the local society.
Holland is sometimes used in English and other languages as the alternative name of the modern country of the Netherlands. Holland is an old historical name that defines today only the provinces of the west coast of the country. Name Holland should not be used to refer the whole country.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is not just limited to a small country in Europe, bordering Germany and Belgium. It is worth knowing that the Netherlands is partly located in the Caribbean. The Caribbean Netherlands consists of three special municipalities: the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba. Apart from the Netherlands, partners in the Kingdom are other islands in the Caribbean Sea: Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
