It was once a main city in Malta. When Knights of Saint John arrived here in 1530, they settled in Birgu (Vittoriosa). Until Great Siege of Malta of 1565, and founding of Valletta, Birgu was de facto capital of the island. Today it is a quiet town, one of the picturesque Three Cities located a short ferry ride across the Great Harbour from Valletta. Birgu has long wharf with countless moored yachts, narrow streets, and Fort St Angelo on the tip of peninsula.
