Madeira has hundreds of tunnels of almost every type you could imagine. There are road tunnels, pedestrian tunnels, levada tunnels, old hand-dug tunnels, short and long, wet and dry, lit or dark. Some tunnels have fallen into disuse, the cliff roads have been closed and replaced by wider and faster highways. Not long ago, it took 8 hours to drive across the island of Madeira. Today we drove the same distance in just 1 hour. All the tunnels in Madeira have one thing in common, there are no tolls for cars or pedestrians.
