There are two smaller palaces located the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. It is the Grand Trianon in the French Baroque style and the Petit Trianon in the Neoclassical style. For Louis XIV and Louis XV, these were places of refuge from the formal Versailles lifestyle.
Many foreign guests lived in Grand Trianon, including Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia and Stanislas Leszczynski, former king of Poland. Even Napoleon Bonaparte made this palace one of his residences.
In 1774, young King Louis XVI gave the Petit Trianon to his wife Marie Antoinette. This place gave the queen the opportunity to escape from the formalities of court life. Ten years later, the queen decided to build her own farm in the garden surrounding the palace, known today as the Queen's Hamlet.
