Helfštýn Castle in Czechia was probably first built at the end of the 13th century as a base for local bandits robbing merchants. Over the centuries, it became the seat of noble families who transformed it into a Gothic castle. Helfštýn Castle on the hill with its massive walls, network of bastions, five gates and four courtyards has become an impregnable fortress. When the castle was abandoned in the 17th century, the stronghold falling into ruin once again became the base of a band of robbers.
