Milan's reputation as Italy's most prosperous industrial and commercial city is reflected in its remarkable cemetery. Opened in 1866, the Monumental Cemetery contains countless mausoleums of the Milan’s most prominent families.
The cemetery is famous for its beautifully decorated tombs and sculptures in various styles. From typical monuments to small Tombs, many tombs are unusual. For example, on a large column meant to evoke the Tower of Babel, scenes from the Stations of the Cross are carved. It is the grave of an Italian industrialist. Elsewhere, you can find large statues forming the Last Supper scene, which decorates the tomb of the Campari family. There is also a bronze sphere by Arnaldo Pomodoro and many other sculptures.
