Construction of Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre district in Paris considered is an act of French national penance after the defeat of Franco-Prussian War in in 1870 and for the actions of Paris Commune of 1871. Some viewed these events as divine punishment for French moral decline.
Church features a mosaic that portrays the risen Christ. The artwork measures 5,112 sq feet /475 sq meters and is considered to be one of the largest mosaics in the world.
