The castle overlooks one of the oldest districts of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The origins of Sao Jorge Castle date back to the 2nd century BC. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and later Visigoths used the hill for their fortifications when they ruled the city. The Moors, who drove away the Visigoths, ruled here from the mid-8th century until 1147. The walls and towers of the castle date from this time, and there is not much more to see today.
