The eastern end of the island of Madeira has a semi-arid climate. This area, exposed to constant northerly winds, has no trees. Most of the vegetation, if any, is shrubs. São Lourenco peninsula is a sharp contrast to the rest of the island, which is mostly covered in evergreen forest.
