The wealthy English merchant Francis Cook built the Monserrate Palace on the hills of Sintra as his summer residence. It is a near-perfect blend of Gothic and Moorish architectural styles. Along with the nearby Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, it is a magnificent example of Romanticism in Portugal.
