Situated almost next door to the Portuguese capital Lisbon, Sintra has a surprisingly drastically different climate. In Lisbon it is dry and hot in the summer, while at the same time the mountainous Sintra region has a lot of greenery and pleasantly mild temperatures. This is probably one of the main reasons why, looking for an escape from the big city, so many wealthy people have decided to build their castles and palaces in this area.
