This small island in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean is only 25 kilometers/ 16 miles long and 5 kilometers/ 3 miles wide. Anguilla was colonized by English settlers who brought African slaves with them. The island was administered by the British until 1952, when it became part of the West Indies Federation, and later associated with Saint Kitts-Nevis. The people of Anguilla, however, did not want to be part of the union or gain full independence. In 1967, Anguilla voted in a referendum to return to the British Crown. After turbulent years, in 1980, the island officially became a British Crown colony.
A short ferry crossing from Saint Martin or Sint Maarten is all you need to get here. The standard of living in Anguilla is not very high. As you drive around the island, you will see many abandoned homes possibly damaged by hurricanes, and even resorts in ruins. Apart from the beaches, there is not much to see here. One of the beaches is worth mentioning. Hidden among the rocks, Little Bay can be visited by boat or by easy climb down with help of rope over the rock. Do not miss the chance to see this hidden deserted beach.
