Saint Martin in the Caribbean is the northern part of the island with the same name. This overseas part of France is also part of the European Union, but there is very little that resembles it. The capital town of Marigot, is poor and deterrent. Nothing attracts tourists here. The same applies to the Dutch part of the island, Sint Maarten. There is not much to see and not much to do here. The whole island is overdeveloped and overpopulated, and nature is mostly degraded. There is a lack of funds to rebuild the damages caused by the more frequent and the strongest hurricanes in our written history. When visiting the island, it is not difficult to see many damaged houses and countless boats pushed ashore. Traveling around the island brings mainly depressing views.
This is the only place in the world where border runs between Republic of France and the Kingdom of Netherlands. Two parts, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten have been living in peace for centuries, based on the treaty from 1648. The border obelisks standing today are the only visible symbol of the formal division of the island.
