I keep in mind the coral reef I first saw around Culebra Island almost 25 years ago. A colorful underwater ecosystem that was home to a variety of marine life. Wherever I dive now, the reef always disappoints me because it does not resemble the one, I remember. The coral reef around Saint Kitts is no exception. There are reports of dying Caribbean reefs, and you can see this for yourself by diving underwater. The coral reefs are no longer as vibrant. The elegant purple fan corals are rare, healthy yellow brain corals are infrequent. Dead coral covered in algae dominates the landscape. Almost everything underwater is brown, and marine life is becoming scarce.
