Haiti

While in Haiti, it is not difficult to notice that it is the poorest country in the Americas. As everywhere, poverty affects environmental pollution. In Cap-Haïtien, however, we were shocked by the size of the problem seeing mountains of garbage covering almost every open space.

From a historical point of view, Haiti is the most interesting country in the entire Caribbean. This is the place of the first European settlement in the Americas. In 1492, during his first voyage, Christopher Columbus discovered this island and called it La Española. When in 17th century the western part of the island was ceded to France, a colony of Saint-Domingue was established here, which became the richest French dominium. The prosperity based on the sugarcane production and hard work of slaves brought mainly from West Africa. A successful revolution led to the abolition of slavery. In 1804, a new nation was formed, which took its name from the Taino Indians, the indigenous people who called this land Haiti. This is the only country in the world established as a result of a successful slave revolt.
