French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity. The area it covers in the South Pacific is more than half of Western and Central Europe combined. French Polynesia divided is into five groups of islands: the Society Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Marquesas, Gambier Islands, and Austral Islands. Tahiti with the capital in Papete, in the Society Islands group, is the most populous island, having almost 70% of the population of entire French Polynesia.
