The New Caledonia Barrier Reef is the second-longest coral reef in the world. It surrounds Grand Terre - the main island - and many smaller islands including Ile des Pins in the south. Shallow turquoise water around countless islets can be found far away from the shore. Brought in pieces from France, Amedee lighthouse stands on one of such isles. It marks the natural passage that leads to colonial capital of Nouméa.
