In the Tuamotu chain of islands (part of French Polynesia), Rangiroa is the largest atoll. Rangiroa is an unbroken chain of ring-shaped coral reefs with a calm lagoon inside. It is like a giant lake in the middle of the ocean surrounded by over 400 uninhabited flat islands, called motu. This atoll is so large in area that in its interior, the entire island of Tahiti would fit. The exchange of water from the lagoon to the surrounding ocean occurs through narrow passages between the motu. Permanently inhabited are only two islands. Small patches of land built of coral and sand do not have drinking water sources. To survive, residents need to collect and store rainwater.
Rangiroa is calm, sleepy, and lazy. There are not many attractions here. However, diving is exceptional. Passes connecting the lagoon with the open ocean attract variety of fish species.
